Digital Gold Could Unlock $700 Billion in New Demand

  • The World Gold Council estimates digital gold could unlock up to $700 billion in potential demand.
  • Younger buyers could expand the gold market, with many purchasing physical precious metals after trying digital gold.
  • Physical gold remains the foundation of digital products and an important option for protecting retirement savings.

A New Gold Market

Gold has preserved wealth for thousands of years. Now, it’s getting a digital makeover.

The World Gold Council (WGC) and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) released a new report – Digital Gold: Unlocking a $700-Billion Opportunity. Digital gold allows people to buy and own physical gold through online platforms and digital tokens. The report estimates that it could generate up to $700 billion in additional demand over the long term.

The market currently stands at $45 billion to $55 billion, a small fraction of the roughly $13 trillion physical investment gold market. Yet growth is accelerating. Tokenized gold has expanded fivefold since late 2024, with trading volume exceeding $90 billion in the first quarter of 2026 alone.

The report suggests digital innovation could dramatically expand gold ownership, creating new demand for the physical metal that supports the entire market.

Gold Goes Digital

Digital gold allows people to purchase fractional amounts of physical gold through financial apps, online accounts, and blockchain-based tokens.

Two forms dominate the market. Vaulted digital gold allows buyers to own gold stored by a third-party custodian. Tokenized gold represents ownership through digital tokens backed by physical bullion.

Vaulted products account for approximately 89% of today’s digital gold market. Tokenized products represent the remaining 11% but are responsible for much of its recent growth.

The appeal is convenience. Consumers can purchase small quantities without arranging storage or transportation, making gold accessible to people who might never consider buying a traditional bar or coin.

A Younger Generation

The WGC surveyed more than 12,000 people across 12 markets and found that nearly nine in ten would consider digital gold if certain obstacles were addressed.

Interest is particularly strong among younger adults. Half of respondents aged 25 to 34 were aware of digital gold, compared with just 23% of those aged 55 and older.

Adoption is already gaining momentum in Asia. In India, more than 120 million customers have participated in digital gold transactions, often through familiar banking and payment applications.

The implications extend well beyond digital platforms.

New Buyers, More Gold

One of the report’s most significant findings is that digital gold could attract new money into the precious metals market rather than simply redirect existing purchases.

Approximately 65% of potential new demand would come from people who do not currently own gold.

Even more revealing, 52% of surveyed digital gold holders had never owned gold before their first digital purchase. Of those first-time buyers, 92% subsequently purchased other forms of gold.

Digital gold could therefore serve as an introduction to traditional gold ownership, including physical bullion.

Trust Remains Essential

Despite widespread interest, digital gold faces obstacles that could limit adoption.

Trust is the greatest challenge. Nearly four in five respondents prioritize confidence in the provider. And more than 40% say a major custody failure, fraud, or hack would damage their confidence.

Consumers want assurance that their digital holdings are backed by genuine physical gold. They also want clear protections and the ability to exchange their digital ownership for actual bullion.

Other challenges include limited access, transaction costs, and the need for practical applications such as payments or borrowing against holdings.

The WGC plans to address some of these concerns through its proposed Gold as a Service infrastructure. It will be designed to strengthen transparency, auditing, and physical redemption.

Ultimately, confidence in digital gold depends on confidence in the metal behind it.

How Far Could It Grow?

The $700 billion figure represents the market’s estimated long-term potential. The 2031 projections reflect how much of that opportunity could realistically be captured within five years.

The WGC projects digital gold could more than triple to between $160 billion and $170 billion by 2031, representing approximately 27% annual growth.

Under a more optimistic scenario, the market could reach $270 billion to $280 billion. Even its conservative forecast anticipates growth to $70 billion to $80 billion.

Reaching those figures will depend on stronger consumer protections, broader banking access, competitive pricing, and expanded uses for digital gold.

Nevertheless, the projections suggest another substantial source of demand could emerge for physical gold in the coming years.

Physical Gold’s Enduring Value

New technology may change how people purchase gold, but it cannot replace the physical metal underlying these products.

Digital ownership introduces additional dependencies on platforms, custodians, and technology. Direct physical ownership offers a different approach, allowing people to hold tangible precious metals without relying on a digital token issuer.

For Americans concerned about inflation, economic uncertainty, and protecting their retirement savings, physical gold continues to offer an established means of diversification. Through a Gold IRA, Americans can also hold physical precious metals in a tax-advantaged retirement account.
