You’re Doing Well. Can the Economy Keep Up?

  • Rising asset values have strengthened many older Americans’ finances, while other households face growing debt pressure.
  • A stock-market downturn could reverse retirement gains as weakening consumer spending puts pressure on businesses.
  • A Gold IRA can help protect your finances by diversifying retirement savings with physical precious metals.

More Wealth, More to Protect

Years of saving and rising asset values may have put your retirement on firmer ground. A larger account balance can make everyday expenses feel manageable and long-planned luxuries possible. Yet financial pressure is building among households that have shared fewer of those gains.

The Federal Reserve’s latest Survey of Consumer Finances illustrates the divide. Families headed by someone 75 or older saw median net worth rise 37% between 2022 and 2025. The figures are adjusted for inflation and include assets such as homes and retirement accounts, minus debts. The Fed attributed much of this group’s increase to rising retirement-account values.1

Stock-market performance helped. The S&P 500 gained approximately 78% between the end of 2022 and 2025. Those gains helped build financial cushions. However, those cushions remain exposed to a market reversal and broader economic pressures. Today’s stronger financial position offers an opportunity to prepare for those risks and diversify your portfolio.

A Growing Financial Divide

The same economy can produce very different experiences. A household with substantial stock holdings can benefit from rising markets. Meanwhile another may have little left after paying for necessities and servicing debt. Financial strength at one end can obscure the difficulties developing at the other.

Families headed by someone under 35 saw median net worth fall 23% to $33,000. Much of that decline came from falling values of businesses those families owned, reversing gains made between 2019 and 2022.  Repayment trouble also increased. Nearly 20% of families reported being late on a loan payment during the previous year, up from 12.2% in the 2022 survey. 3

Interconnected Finances

Even a debt-free retiree remains connected to households struggling with payments. The companies held in retirement funds depend on customers buying their products and services. When families reduce purchases to cover essentials, businesses can lose revenue. Their earnings can disappoint and share prices can come under pressure.

Credit provides another connection. U.S. Bank’s analysis points to tighter lending standards across key segments. There is also greater reliance on borrowing among financially constrained households. Reduced access to credit can further limit purchases and business activity.

Higher-income households can help sustain spending. But their willingness to spend also depends partly on financial confidence. The Fed’s latest survey found that the top 10% of families by income accounted for 28.5% of spending. U.S. Bank warns that a narrower base of demand leaves the economy more sensitive to market volatility. If stocks fall, affluent households may postpone purchases too, adding to the weakness already affecting businesses.4

A recession is one possible outcome if those pressures deepen. Retirement portfolios can feel the effects well before an official downturn is declared.

Retirement Changes the Stakes

A market decline becomes more consequential when savings are already paying the bills. Someone still working may continue contributing through a downturn. A retiree may need to sell holdings at depressed prices to meet ordinary expenses. Selling more shares to raise the same amount of cash leaves fewer shares participating in a recovery.

Hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones recently warned, “2027 is going to be really, really challenging for the stock market.” He pointed to an expected increase in share supply from major offerings and other sales. Although he also sees the possibility of a strong finish to 2026, his warning raises concerns about the rally’s durability.5

Valuation measures add to those concerns. The Shiller CAPE ratio compares stock prices with a decade of inflation-adjusted earnings. It recently exceeded 40, a level associated with the dot-com era. The Buffett Indicator puts total U.S. stock-market value at roughly 238% of annual economic output. It is another sign of expensive valuations. Neither measure can predict when a decline will begin.6

Inflation adds pressure. Consumer prices rose 3.7% over the year ending in September, up from 3.4% in August. Gasoline accounted for more than half of September’s monthly increase. Higher living costs can require larger withdrawals just when a portfolio has less room to absorb them.

Protecting Your Progress

The wealth accumulated through decades of saving deserves a strategy for changing conditions. Diversification can help reduce dependence on continued stock-market strength and the spending that supports corporate earnings.

Physical gold adds an asset whose value does not depend on a company meeting profit targets or a borrower making scheduled payments. Its demand comes from a variety of sources, including central banks. Those different influences can help mute risk.

A Gold IRA allows eligible physical precious metals to be held within a tax-advantaged retirement account. For Americans whose savings have grown, diversification can help protect what’s in their nest egg.
